Erica Martinez began her involvement with United Way of Metropolitan Dallas (UWMD) in 2003 and has been a shining example of what it means to LIVE UNITED ever since. Her involvement in the workplace, as a United Way volunteer and as a donor encompasses the LIVE UNITED message of Give. Advocate. Volunteer.
“United Way is a change-driven organization that I can count on to put my dollars to good use. When I fill out my pledge card every year, I know my dollars will not only impact current struggles within the Dallas area, but also help create a better place for future generations to live, work and play,” Erica said.
Erica has become part of the change as Human Resources Director for Slingshot, LLC, a Dallas-based advertising agency. Erica was first introduced to United Way during a company campaign fundraiser in 2003. From that first introduction, her involvement has grown from leading Slingshot’s internal campaigns to being an integral member of the Women’s Leadership Council, a networking society for women who give $1,000 or more to United Way per year.
When asked how she has benefitted from her involvement with United Way, Erica told a personal story of her family’s experience with a UWMD partner agency during a time of need this past year. After her mother was diagnosed with breast cancer, the family turned to the American Cancer Society (ACS) for answers as well as for comfort.
“It speaks volumes to me that the ACS is one of United Way’s agencies. And it made me realize that while I may have initially sought to help others with my involvement, United Way was the one that leant me, my mom and our family a supportive hand when we needed it most.”
Erica received a bachelor’s degree in political science from TexasA&MUniversity and a master’s degree in Liberal Arts from SMU. Erica is training for her first marathon in December and enjoys baking and renovating the 1950’s home she shares with her husband and two German Shorthaired Pointers.
United Way would like to thank Erica for representing what it means to LIVE UNITED in our community.
