My name is Hector Escamilla, Jr. and I LIVE UNITED in our community through United Way of Metropolitan Dallas.
For the last five years, being a United Way volunteer has given me a unique opportunity to serve multiple non-profit organizations in the Dallas area. As a Dallas ISD Bryan Adams High School graduate, investing in results-driven programs in my community is extremely important.
Destination: Graduation (D:G) is one of United Way’s special initiatives designed to help youth succeed through high school graduation. Implemented in Dallas and Plano ISDs, participating students graduate at a 15 percent higher rate than comparable students at the same schools. Just this spring, D:G expanded to DISD and PISD middle schools, increasing the chance for participating students to graduate.
Another unique volunteer role in which I serve is chair of the United Way Latino Leadership Initiative (LLI). LLI provides an opportunity for enrichment, recognition and volunteerism among Latino donors who contribute $1,000 or more annually to United Way and its mission to improve lives in our communities.
Being involved in re-launching LLI this year, I have had the opportunity to meet other like-minded, philanthropic professionals and look forward to seeing LLI members impact lives.
