Throughout his 30-year career at Baylor University Medical Center (BUMC), Don Scarbrough’s enthusiasm for United Way has inspired many.
His volunteer spirit and passion to help the community had him LIVING UNITED long before the movement began.
“It’s easy to get people involved when you can make a personal tie or demonstrate how any gift, regardless of size, can make a difference,” Don said.
For the 2008 campaign, Don and his team decided to send people to “Jail” to boost excitement. For several years, this event has sent numerous managers to the “big house” and raised thousands of dollars for BUMC’s workplace campaign.
“Jail,” along with other events, including a raffle for a 52-inch flat-screen HD TV, is just one example of how Don has gone above and beyond in his volunteer role for United Way of Metropolitan Dallas. As a veteran volunteer, Don has co-chaired the workplace campaign several times and knows the hard work it takes to achieve success.
That hard work and dedication helped BUMC raise more than $600,000 in 2008. At the BUMC location where Don works, employees raised $174,192 — a whopping 27 percent above goal!
Another unique aspect of BUMC’s campaign is the support given to the campaign at all levels, starting with Joel Allison, BUMC’s chief executive officer, who makes the United Way campaign a top priority.
Don believes that commitment to United Way exists because most in the health care industry have a personal desire to give and make lives better – which falls right in line with United Way and its mission to improve lives in our communities.
For all he’s done for more than three decades for our community, United Way would like to thank Don Scarbrough for LIVING UNITED.
