African American Leadership Society

Members of United Way's African American Leadership Society (AALS) have committed themselves to improving the lives of our youth by focusing their work on the Oak Cliff Boys & Girls Club.

This year-long partnership began in September 2008 when AALS members began volunteering at the club every Tuesday night, helping youth with their homework and serving as mentors.

In addition, AALS also stepped up to provide assistance for the club's 2008 Christmas party. AALS members, along with two other organizations, donated more than 100 presents for the party, where AALS volunteers handed out gifts and played games with the kids.

Here's what some AALS volunteers and Oak Cliff club staff have to say about the exciting volunteer tutoring opportunity:

George Kennard, AT&T

A prime opportunity for impact: Every one of the kids is full of potential that just needs to be tapped and nurtured on a consistent basis. The kids are starving and desiring for opportunities to grow and develop their minds.

Chanceé Lundy, Texas Instruments

Why she signed up: I've always loved the art of teaching. I'm excited to give back. Being an engineer, I can help in areas like math.

Gina Toliver, mother of two club members

What AALS volunteers give the kids: Their presence gives them hope and something to look forward to. It's a positive thing for the kids.

Lois Cross, Oak Cliff Boys & Girls Club

The impact of AALS volunteers: Often, we feel like the "forgotten" club. I'm so grateful to AALS and all the time they are putting in with the kids. This is one of the greatest things to happen here.

Tamme Gaddis, Lennox International

A rewarding experience on both sides: I leave with a feeling of hope. I’ve made a difference in at least one young person’s life by ensuring they receive a good grade on their homework.

Rebekah Wilson, Enterprise-Rent-A-Car

It's not too late to volunteer; for more information contact Dana Glenn at dglenn@unitedwaydallas.org or 214.978.0041. This volunteer effort lasts throughout the school year.

AALS is supported by approximately 300 community members who are encouraged to become ambassadors of United Way, serving as good stewards and advocates through leadership giving. AALS members give $1,000 or more annually and also serve as volunteers on United Way's board of directors, campaign cabinet and Community Investment committees.
