City of Garland donates over $63,000 to the United Way

The 2007 United Way campaign was the most successful campaign in the history of the City of Garland. During the 2007 campaign the City of Garland raised $63,149 for the United Way of Metropolitan Dallas and its partner agencies.

The campaign grew by 27% from 2006 to 2007 and moved into second place among the 17 cities in the DFW area that run campaigns. This growth wouldn't be possible without the support of the 362 city employees that gave during the campaign.

This growth was made possible because of the hard work of the campaign steering committee chaired by Carol Bentzlin and the Leadership Giving Campaign chaired by Lonnie Banks. With the steering committee leading the way, the City of Garland held one leadership breakfast and one leadership luncheon with keynote speakers that talked about the need in the community. Two Team Leaders trainings were held to educate the team leaders about the United Way and to prepare them for the upcoming campaign. The city employees also had the chance to hear about the United Way during employee meetings in departments throughout the city. City Departments also participated in a Pennies War. The grand finale was the United Way Victory Luncheon were team leaders were recognized for their hard work and dedication. 4 employees received the new Above and Beyond Award for their extra efforts on behalf of the campaign.

The City of Garland also recognizes 61 donors as "Top Hands" donors. These donors gave at least one hours pay per month and receive special recognition throughout the year for their generous donation.

Campaign success was at an all-time high this year thanks to the leadership of the City Manager Bill Dollar, Deputy City Manager, Martin Glenn, and increased employee participation. By touching each individual on a personal level, The City of Garland has produced a culture of giving that is sustainable.
